Peanuts are an excellent plant for kids to grow. From planting to harvesting, the peanuts take less than 100 days. Attractive pea-shaped yellow flowers are followed by a ‘peg’ that grows and penetrates the soil, from which the peanut pods develop. A good friable soil will see the plant grow quickly and create many flowers and pegs. Please do not give a nitrogen fertiliser, as Peanuts are legumes and make their own Nitrogen. An application of Dolomite would be helpful. Keep well-watered, but keep foliage dry to prevent fungal diseases. Once the foliage starts to yellow and dies off, remove the plant (and all pods) from the soil or container and leave it to dry in the sun until you hear the peanuts moving around the pods. At that point, you can eat the fresh peanuts or store them for later use.
