Garlic

 

Garlic is an essential ingredient in helping to bring out and add flavour to all cooking.

 

Getting started

Traditionally garlic is planted on the shortest day and harvested on the longest. However garlic can be planted from late May through to early August.

We recommend planting New Zealand bred garlic and below are two of our favourites which are proven successes.

  • Printanor - common white garlic with great flavour
  • Elephant  - extra large garlic with mild flavour.

 

Where to plant

  • Garlic requires a sunny position with well draining soil.
  • Dig General Garden Fertiliser into the soil before planting.

 

How to plant

  • Split your garlic bulbs into individual cloves and push each clove into the soil so that just the point is sticking out above the soil line.
  • Plant each clove about 10cm apart
  • To get your garlic off to the best start, try planting in old punnet containers filled with potting mix as shown on the right. This helps to develop the roots before you transplant them to the garden bed.
  • Garlic is a great companion plant for stone fruit, it helps to prevent curly leaf so plant underneath your apricots, nectarines and peaches.

 

Tending

  • Garlic do not require a lot of attention, simply water during dry periods.

 

Harvesting

  • Harvest around the longest day of the year when tops fall over
  • Lift and dry thoroughly in a well ventilated sunny area for 1-2 weeks
  • Once dry, hang in bundles of 6-8 in a dark, ventilated place
  • Keeps up to 1 year
