 Out in the Garden

Now is the perfect time for sowing seeds, especially when we are having the wild spring weather we are currently experiencing.  For those of you fortunate enough to have a greenhouse – it is the perfect place to keep warm and dry or for most of us, under cover of the veranda has to do.

The range of seeds is massive, and Yates has bought out two new ranges to try.  Their new organic range includes, Basil, Beetroot, Broccoli, Capsicum, Carrot, Cauliflower, Chilli Pepper, Cucumber, Parsley, Pumpkin (butternut), Rocket, Radish, Spring Onions, and Tomato (roma).  They are grown under strictly controlled organic and chemical free conditions.

There is also a new Fusion range available, three salad greens, and six flowering ones.  This is a new technology whereby 3 – 5 seeds, of different species or varieties are bonded together into a small pellet using very fine clay.  Seeds germinate simultaneously, producing a fantastic ‘fusion’ of foliage and/or flowers, which lasts an entire season.

Our begonia tubers have arrived.  These are flat tubers, producing short, heavy, succulent stems carrying large often hairy leaves and a huge range of flower types and colours.  They are suitable for indoor or outdoor cultivation, flowering from mid summer to the first frost.  There are also some cascading ones that make awesome hanging baskets.

Yates has also bought out a new product called Roundup Weedkiller Gel.  It is a multi-purpose weedkiller, killing weeds and deep rooted perennial weeds.  The cap flips off and when pressure is applied to the sides, a gel emerges, touch the offending plant with it, when finished just click the cap back on.  Great for flat weeds in the lawn, or weeds in the garden, including oxalis.  It is brilliant for those tricky weeds in the garden or where weeds pop through cracks in pathways etc.
