As New Zealand's Garden Centre of the Year we take pride in providing our customers with excellent service, knowledge and top quality products in inspirational, all-weather shopping surroundings. Our working edible garden and water garden complement the friendly relaxed atmosphere while showcasing and experimenting with the latest gardening trends. How it all began . . . Vince and Ann have owned and operated Big Jims Garden Centre since the end of the last century....finishing at Duncan & Davies to step into the garden retail industry.
Originally this site, situated on the outskirts of New Plymouth was used as a fruit and vege shop before being transformed into a garden centre. This site was named after a Maori man named Hemi Te Waka who was a scout for the British during the Maori land wars in the 1860s. He was nick named 'Big Jim' or 'Taranaki Jim' and was mortally wounded near the garden centre resulting in "Big Jims Garden Centre".
Since 1999 the garden centre continues to grow and develop with the help of a team of 8 expert staff members. Passion and dedication to the horticultural industry drive Vince, Ann and the Big Jims team to provide inspirational ideas featuring evolving gardening trends. This has seen the construction of our water garden and vege patch and brand upgrade. Vince has even bred a few of his own plants including the dwarf flax 'Black Magic' and the pseudopanax 'Bronze Warrior'.
The Vege Patch . . . Our working edible garden managed by Diane demonstrates espaliered fruit trees, grape vines and berries enclosing vegetables and herbs in raised garden beds. Our vege patch introduces and trials new and inspirational techniques for achieving a prosperous edible garden. We trial all traditional and new release fruit and veges while implementing companion planting to ward of nasty pests and diseases. The principle of permaculture is applied with our chooks which provide a food source while returning waste to the soil. |
